Here, every step takes you to a visible trace of human history : you will follow pilgrimages routes drawn during the 12th century, discover centuries old stone-built houses and castles from the Middle Age... The main part of the region is a limestone plateau cut by deep valleys. The Quercy is well known for its unforgettable village markets and also for its gastronomic delights.

Day 1: Welcome in Gourdon at the end of the afternoon; Drive to the accommodation nearby. Eat and sleep in an ancient stone house, typical of the area, and discover the hospitality of the local people.

Day 2 :

A splendid pilgrimage route will lead you through a canyon to the Rocamadour's surprising site, filled with historical tales. Crossing of the Gramat limestone plateau and its tracks & roads surrounded by small stone fences

The plateau is an arid region with specific flora, land of orchids and numerous other flowers but also with remote ancient villages . Time seems to have no effect on this area so well preserved ..

Shepherds' stone huts, that locals call "Cazelles" are usually circular in shape with a conical roof of flat stones. They have been built from ancient times, more then 3000 years ago!

Day 3 & 4:

The beautiful upper part of the Dordogne valley is the border between the Quercy and the Dordogne regions. Numerous treasures like medieval villages and beautiful scenery. Lacave cave & castle, fortified villages, a castle which is one of the largest fortress in the south of France... In the valley, the nice Saint-Cere is protected by the high towers of Saint-laurent-les-tours, that are now home of Jean Lurcat painter museum. And also the Montal renaissance castle ...

 

Day 5:

The "chestnut grove" area and its beautiful scenery. People collect chestnut from the introduction of chestnut trees by the Romans, 2000 years ago. Medieval towns and castles. Superb scenery.

Day 6 & 7:

The sublime parts of the Lot & the Cele valleys, surrounded of limestone cliffs. A very high but narrow castle but also a circular medieval village and its cirque will charm you, as well as among others, a castle on its rocky promontory. St Cirq lapopie famous village: overlooking a bend in the Lot, the village is perched on the edge of the cliff; the ancient houses rise up over the rocky slope protected by the 500 years old church.

Riding level : 45/50 km per day as average (can be easily adapt to the group level). Daily longer options and climbs. Some stages are on moderately hilly terrain. Others ones are on hilly terrain.

Gourdon is on the train line from Paris to Toulouse (several trains a day). It is also on the highway from Paris to Toulouse.
